Year 1 - Science Week

This year’s theme for science week is about being curious.  We discussed so many things we were curious about. To recap our knowledge of seasons, we looked at what happens in each season and some signs of Spring that we were starting to notice. After discussion, we created a seasons grid to show our understanding of each season. We thought about the changes that happen to trees, animals, weather and people.

We learnt about our 5 senses: smell, taste, touch, sight and hear. We completed some investigations to see if we could use our senses, such as a taste test for different flavoured crisps, a touch test for items hidden in a bag, a hearing test where we tried to listen to things close and far away, and a smell test where we tried to guess different items just by smelling them!

Later on in the week, we had a discussion about baby animals and what we call them. We were lucky to have a visitor from Longleat who taught us all about the 5 animal groups.  We conducted an investigation to see whether blubber works to keep penguins and other polar animals warm. We used a vegan fat blubber glove and tested it in the some icy, cold water. It kept one hand warm but the unprotected hand got cold very quickly! After the experiment, we discussed our results.

We enjoyed a visit from MCS construction. Danielle spoke to us about the different jobs within construction and how important science is in these jobs. Maybe one day we will become plumbers, electricians or structural/interior designers. We had the chance to make our own constructions. Working in groups of 5 or 6 we were tasked to design and make a structure with 3 stories using straws and connectors. We learnt so much about teamwork, resilience, communication and co-operation and had so much fun creating!
