Year 2 - Science Week
To begin science week, we logged in to watch the BBC live lesson all about space and light. We helped the crew put together a production of the moon to explain the part he plays in the solar system. We then had a think about this year’s theme of ‘Curiosity’. We talked about some STEM jobs and about the kind of questions they would ask and how their curiosity helps them to complete their jobs.
On Tuesday, we started by thinking about boats and how they float. We noted down any questions we had about how boats float and set them aside to come back to later on. Using a single sheet of paper in pairs, we had a go at creating our own boat designs. We had to think carefully about how we folded the paper and the shapes we made. We thought about what had worked well and what we would change when we make our final boat. The next day, we tested out if our boats could float by placing them in a tuff tray full of water. We even added some marbles to the ones that were successful to see which designs were the best at floating.
On Wednesday, we put our curiosity to the test by asking questions about the natural world. We started by looking at a photo of a sea turtle and in small groups, recorded what we could see. We then used what we know about them already to say what we think about the picture. Finally, we wrote questions about what we wondered about the picture and discussed our ideas as a class.
On Thursday morning, we had a visit from a lady called Angel from the MCS construction company. She talked to us about construction and jobs that involve construction skills. Using straws and connectors we had a go at constructing our own two-story buildings. We had lots of fun! In the afternoon, we logged on and watched the NFU live lesson. The team answered a range of questions sent in from children around the country. We saw different microhabitats that could be found on a farm such as cowpats that dung beetles live in. On a different farm, we saw a farmer training his sheep dogs. We saw how he was using commands and different whistles to get the dogs to move in different directions to control the dogs. Later, we saw how farmers help the environment by creating safe habitats for lots of wild animals including birds. We looked at lots of different birds and where they live. We even got to listen to their different bird songs!
